Just some particle tests as we proceed with the development of our basic prototype.
The idea is to have some nice particle trails attaced to moving “objects”.
The more the object is dangerous, the more the trail will be visible, informing the player that a direct impact is a very bad idea.
We have a very simple damage calculation damage based on mass and speed, this value of potential damage (as it is now is simply the momentum of our objects) will drive the visibility of our “danger trails”.

At the moment we are building a better phisical model of our “tractor beam”; as soon as it’s working properly we will start doing some test throwing stuff at targets.
These tests will help us identify what damage values we are going to have in-game and from these tests we will get some nice statistics that will be the basis of our game balance.

Here, I was preparing a nicer post, but there we go.

Drone starship! Animated.

We are working on a very simple game to better understand Unity.
This title will be the first game born from the ideas thet we call the “Lancelot Project”. Basically it’s the creation of a sci-fi fictionary world that we can use as basis and reference for some of our games.
This game will be an arena shooter where you can’t shoot, bad guys can. You can just throw stuff, so nothing new here, it’s G, with single player.

You know, one day you are full of coders working on your awesome engine, you almost had contracts with publishers , then in the brink of an eye … they are gone.
This crap is always about money (the lack of it) and trust (too much of it).

However with our plans completely screwed up again, we needed a plan B in order to continue pursuing our objectives.
Unity 3D is our plan B.
We dont’ have the resources to build our game engine anymore, and we were growing tired of some of the shortcomings of XNA, like the lack of “serious” portability and updates.

Unity is free, runs even an a wooden log, and best of all has already built-in all the tools and importers we were working so hard to build from scratch.
With little more then one coder left (one day I will enlighten you with the secret of fractional coders) this allows us to focus on doing the games we wanted to make, intead of just building tools and engines.

I’m removing some of the XNA-related content we had on the website, the guy who was working on that stuff vanished into thin air … and this makes us unable to answer you questions and requests on the subject.

We ‘ll keep you posted on Lancelot and the other stuff we are doing with the next update. :D

We are also trying to focus primarly on one of the two projects we are prototyping… the hard part will be to decide wich one comes first!

Also … As soon as I stop writing game-design documents we will have some artworks to show :P

Time to post something! :)
Last week-end was pretty awesome, both at Ludicomix and at the Simulmondo reunion we had a chance to meet a lot of fellow game developers, both indies and “pro”, and share some thoughts and experiences. We even had some nice contacts, and people were generally enthusiast of seeing our stuff even if it was actually pretty old and unfinished.
We had TNOTP and Polpette running, but it was G that held the Studio Evil banner high, even if we were together with other awesome games, like Boring Space Shooter, Falling Rocks (aka Ultimate Ninja Training), Noctu and UFHO2.
We felt that warm and fuzzy Indie spirit and we really have to thank the indievault.it staff for bringing all of us together.

But enough with this! What about our games?
As I write down this post, the rest of the team (read: the coders) are at work designing our new engine and tools.
At the moment we are focused on our level editor and on testing a network p2p structure that should allow multiplayer matches for our games. Yup, games. Plural. Lancelot AND another one.

The next week-end will be a busy one for Studio Evil!
Saturday and sunday we will be in Empoli (near Firenze) together with the other folks from indievault.it to show of some finely crafted italian indie games to the crowd attending Ludicomix 2010.
To be honest we won’t have (yet) anything new worth showing, but we for sure will be challenging everyone in sight to beat us at G… 0_0!
Maybe someone will even be able to score an awesome studio evil t-shirt or see a years old running prototype of the puppeteer editor or even better … Polpette!
Studio Evil aside, the italian indie scene is really blossoming (at it was about time!) our friends from Tiny Colossuss will be bringing a working version of UFHO2, the Pixels from outer space are coming with their adventure game (if my super secret information source it correct)… and the folks from Moonloop … we they’d better bring something uber-cool or I will totally hate them. :P

But it’s not all! Using our secret ninja techniques, we will be able to send our evil shadow clones to another event a the Cineteca Comunale in Bologna. One of the historical italian development companies, “Simulmondo” is holding a reunion, and we are honorured to be their guests.

On a side note, the international beta of enua online has been released. Give it a try, it’s a simple strategic browser game, realtime, no boring tables :P.
The game is not directly built from Studio Evil but several people from our team worked on it, so … let us know waht you think!

One thing you should do when you have a website is READ what you actually wrote, especially if your content is months or years old.

I did, and I should have done it way earlier. Our pages were full of incorrect informations about our projects and team status, and I feel the urge to apologize.

Our website was reporting we were still developing out old projects IMPACT! and Polpette, which sadly is not true.

Since the beginning of this year, we started everyting (well almost everything) from scratch and we are now working on entirely new projects.

You should now find that our website is more in-line with who we are and what we are actually doing.

This year will be really important four us, and we feel the “right moment” is approaching really fast.
If we have good timing and some luck we could actually be able to start a great adventure during the next few months.

Pre-production for our new project, codenamed “Lancelot”, is advancing.
It’s still a draft, but as the concept takes shape we become more and more confident about the possible results.

Wish us luck! :D
