XNA game prototype for Microsoft Dream Build Play 2007.
"
The night of the puppets: road to Yggard" is a game prototype developed for the Microsofr Dream Build Play competition 2007. Built in 3 months and a half night-time using the XNA framework. The complete game would have been an immersive action-adventure set in an original and wacky fantasy world, where the unusual wizard Fangaceus Von Sumpf faces the army of the evil Puppet Master.
However, after submitting the game for the DBP 2007, we found thet the scope of this project required too much resources for our small team, and we decided to put The Night Of The Puppets on hiatus, until we have enough dark powers to resume its development.
For this game concept, we focused on the classical kill-and-collect stereotype of many action-rpgs but removed completely the rpg part. We found that the act of blowing up stuff with fireballs and then collecting the remaining pieces was much more fitting for an old-school shooter.
In the end we had the player use the controller stick to perform gestures in order to invoke and cast powerfull spells against the monsters, and combine their effect into devastating tactics. While all this spell-gesturing slowed the gameplay a little bit, it added several tactital options for the player.
The main character, Fangaceus Von Sumpf, had the ability to control 3 different schools of magic: mud, fire and sorcery, as well as the good old melee attacks.
Every magical school had a purpose; mud was the defensive branch, able to stop arrows or erect "mud-walls" to stop enemies, fire was the total destruction option, packed with bolts and explosions and sorcery was the utility, able to curse the monsters for different effects.
Our editor...
To develop the single level that is featured in the DBP version of The Night of The Puppets, we built our own specific tool: the puppeteer editor. Featuring heightmapped chunked terrain, easy-painting layered textures, animated grass, objects posisitiong and other custimozed stuff.
